Volunteering

The Creston Valley Skating Club relies on the active involvement of skaters and their families to support programs, events, and operations throughout the season. Each skater’s family is required to contribute volunteer time in support of Club activities.

StarSkaters are expected to support the Club by volunteering as Program Assistants throughout the season. This role is an essential part of our Learn to Skate programs and helps ensure a positive experience for all participants.

We want, need, and really encourage you to volunteer - it really helps make programs successful! However, if it's just not possible, we offer an alternative to pay a $200 non‑volunteer fee PER SKATER at the time of registration in lieu of completing volunteer commitments.

Scroll down to sign up for volunteer roles, or click here to pay the non-volunteer fee.

Administration and Promotions

Behind-the-scenes tasks that keep everything running smoothly. Choose from:

Social Media Coordinator: Make our Facebook and Instagram pages as exciting and full of energy as the Club itself is! Drop into events and skating classes to take photos; create reels and memes and posts; celebrate our skaters and their achievements; and put it all out there! Create public events and share them to other sites across the Creston Valley. A few hours a month.

(1/2 Filled) Bulletin Board Coordinator: The Skating Club has a bulletin board in the arena lobby that desperately needs someone to take it in hand! It should be full of posters and information about our programs, events, and activities; photos of skating groups and skater achievements; and everything else the Club does. Think of it as Physical Facebook! Design posters and flyers; drop into events and skating classes to take photos; print everything out; and keep that bulletin board looking as busy and active as the Club is! A few hours per month.

(Filled) Test Chair: Submit StarSkate test results to Skate Canada and update each skater's achievements in Uplifter - it's all done in a simple, repetitive process online, and we can help you get set up with the log-in information you need. An hour or so, twice a season (December and March).

Ice Show

Email us to sign up now! crestonvalleyskatingclub@gmail.com

We're having an ice show this year, and it's an all-hands-on-deck production! We will need your help for a variety of tasks before and during the show. Ice show will be on Saturday, March 6, and dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 4. Details to be confirmed soon!

(1/5 filled) Costumes and Props: Coaches will tell you what costumes and props are needed for each performance. The Club has a stock of costumes from previous ice shows; we can ask skaters to provide common or basic items; scrounge appropriate things from thrift shops; make or modify things ourselves; and, if all else fails, we do have a small budget to purchase specialty items. Let us know what skills you can bring to this role - if you’re a talented sewer, for example, or a champion scrounger - and we’ll match you up with the right costume needs!! All costumes must be provided to skaters in the week leading up to the dress rehearsal on March 4.

(1/5 filled) Decorating Committee: Beg, borrow, build, and (if all else fails) buy decorations for the Club’s ice show on Saturday, March 8. Theme to be determined, but we’re working on that and will let you know by the middle of January what sort of things we’ll be needing. Most decorations will be on the ice or attached to the boards; we can also decorate the arena lobby. Set up decorations ahead of the ice show and clean up afterwards. This includes draping the boards with plastic, putting up lights, placing on-ice props and decorations, and setting up any decorations in the arena lobby. Let us know what your skills are and we’ll match you up with the right decorations!

Promotions: We need lots of promotions - posters; media announcements; Fun Pape ads; social media event listings, posts, and reels; community event calendars; anything else you can think of. You design it all and get it out there.

(Filled) Programs: Design Half-fold booklets with a show-order list of performances with the names of all skaters in each, acknowledgement of coaches and sponsors, a message from the coach(es), acknowledgement of Program Assistants, competition results, etc. Coaches will provide you with necessary information. The Club will provide a small budget for printing. Several draft copies of the program will be required for the dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 4 for review, to ensure everyone is listed and all names are spelled correctly. Final edits and printing on Friday, then up to the arena at least 45 minutes ahead of the performance on Saturday, March 6

Music Coordinator: If you have some basic music-editing skills and the necessary technology, we’d love to know about it. Coaches will give you a list of songs and an outline of how it needs to be cut. We aim to have all the music selected by the beginning of December, and will need the cutting done by early- to mid-January to give skaters time to practice. You’ll purchase the music from Spotify, Apple Music, or your favourite legal music source (the Club will reimburse), cut it as needed, and send an MP4 file to the coaches.

Sponsorships: Request sponsorships to off-set some of the costs; connect with local business owners and individuals to solicit support. Some possibilities include: Cash donations to cover the costs of costumes, props, music, additional ice time, etc; Donations of healthy snacks, juice boxes, bottled water for skaters; Donations of printing, advertising, etc; Donations of materials to build props or make costumes. Coaches will work with you to build a list of things we’ll need. Keep track of sponsorships and donations, and make sure the Ice Show Program Designer has a complete list so all are acknowledged in the program.

Group Captain: You’ll be in charge of one of our CanSkate performance groups - make sure the youngsters all have their costumes on, skates properly tied, and are ready to get on the ice two numbers before their own. Escort them to the ice and back to the change rooms. You can absolutely sign up to be Group Captain for your child’s group - as we get closer to the date, we’ll work out who’s in charge of which group. Sign yourself up, but feel free to recruit a helper - if we have two performances, you can each watch one. Both people will need to be at the dress rehearsal though, to get an orientation into what needs to be done.

Announcer: Manage the music and introduce each performance! If you have a “radio voice” and are comfortable with a microphone, this might be an ideal role for you. We’ll provide you with a script and a show-order playlist for the music. You’ll be in the timekeeper’s booth at rink-side. You’ll need to attend the dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 4. We’re hoping to have two performances on Saturday (we’ll be finalizing that soon). You can recruit someone to announce one of the performances if you prefer, but both of you will need to be at the dress rehearsal.

Rehearsal Assistant: If you have figure skating/ice show/coaching experience, assist Star skaters as they practice their ice show numbers. Coaches will design each performance, give you a diagram to help you know what it’s supposed to involve - and then you help the skaters polish and perfect it. Ideally, you’re on the ice in skates, but this could be done from rink-side if necessary. This role takes place during StarSkate ice times: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 3:30-approximately 5:00, and/or Fridays 6:45-8:00 AM. There will also be additional rehearsal time on Sunday afternoons. You do not need to be present for all those sessions; let us know what works with your schedule and we will plan accordingly.

Admissions Table: Take admissions and hand out programs for the ice show. Most transactions will be cash, with the option of e-transferring the Club’s email. Ideally, two people per performance, and if we have four volunteers everyone can sign up to staff the admissions table at one show and watch the other. Staff the table from 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance until 15 minutes after it begins.

Help with the fun events and the fundraisers! Current positions to choose from:

Lap-a-Thon Prize Coordinator: Gather a variety of small prizes for skaters participating in the Lap-a-Thon (all skaters choose a prize based on the amount of money they raise) and organize somewhat more substantial prizes for the skater in each level who raises the most. Several hours in the weeks leading up to the Lap-a-Thon, Thursday, November 19.

Lap-a-Thon Facilitator: Set up, staff, and clean up one of the tables in the arena lobby during the Lap-a-Thon on Thursday, November 19: registration (check in skaters, record money raised); prizes (ensure each skater chooses an appropriate prize after they have skated their laps); refreshments (supervise the snacks and drinks). 3:00 - 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 19.

(3/6 filled) Lap-a-Thon Lap Counter: On ice or rink-side, count the number of laps the skater(s) assigned to you complete. Maximum three skaters per half-hour segment, please sign up for a minimum of two segments. 3:00 - 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 19.

(Filled) Christmas Party Goodie Bags: Gather small treats and package them up in goodie bags for skaters and guests at the Christmas Party, Tuesday, December 15. A few hours in the week or so prior to December 15.

Christmas Party Props and Decorations: Gather, scrounge, build props and decorations to turn the arena lobby and the ice itself into a fun, festive space for our Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 15. Set up and clean-up the day of, 4:30-6:30 Tuesday, December 15.

Santa Claus: On-ice, in skates - good skating skills required. Skate with the kids during the Christmas Party! Often, Santa takes part in the on-ice games, plays a little hockey at one end of the ice, and might even show off a few fancy figure-skating moves. Towards the end of the party, he hands out goodie bags to all the skaters and drops into the arena lobby to make sure any little ones there get a goodie bag, too. We can provide a costume, and we'll have goodie bags ready for you to hand out.

Christmas Party Facilitator: Set up, staff, and clean up the registration table, checking in skaters and guests as they arrive, or the refreshment tables during the Christmas Party. 4:30-6:30, Tuesday, December 15.

Kootenay Championships Fundraising Table: We sell stuffed toys for friends and family to throw on the ice after skaters’ performances. There may also be a few skating accessories for sale. Stuffed toys are sold for $2 to $20, depending on size (and we’re generally pretty flexible on that!); all other items will have prices marked. Most transactions are in cash, with the option to e-transfer the Club. Shifts start as early as 8:00 AM, until 6:00 or 8:00 at night. The competition usually wraps up about 2:00 PM on Sunday. Friday, February 12 through Sunday, February 14.

(1/6 filled) Kootenay Championships Event Staff: The Kootenay Regional Figure Skating Championships are held in Creston each February. Kootenay Region, which organizes the event, needs volunteers from participating skating clubs to take on tasks to make the event a success. The Region will circulate a list of roles and shifts a week or two ahead of the competition. In the meantime, select this volunteer role and we’ll make sure you get the sign-up sheet when it’s available. A brief orientation will be provided for all roles, so don’t worry if you’re not sure what’s involved! It is generally expected that all competitors or their families sign up for at least one role at the competition.

Thank you for volunteering!

Your involvement means we can provide top-quality programs and ensure that all our skaters have a fantastic experience.

If it is simply not possible for you to volunteer, please click here to add the non-volunteer fee to your cart.

We will track volunteer support throughout the season to ensure you get credit and recognition for your involvement! In the event skaters or families have not completed a volunteer commitment this season, we will apply the non-volunteer fee to their account.
